Dually award-winning design

19. September 2017

The new E line single-spindle honing machine from KADIA has received not just one, but two prestigious awards: This year's iF Design Award, which it received in March, followed recently by the coveted "Red Dot" award.

With the generous access areas of its machining space framed in a darker tone, and its minimalist design that features clean, basic forms and smartly placed maintenance openings, the new E line single-spindle honing machine is consequently consistent with KADIA's design language. With its clean shapes, well-structured joint arrangement and premium details, the machine virtually embodies the manufacturer's precision standards. The E line is the entry model in the world of KADIA machine technology, and the optimum match for small to medium production volumes.

“With its convex form, the honing machine appears particularly generous and very user-friendly. At the same time, it features impressive compactness.” This is a fully up-to-date quote from the opinion of the Red Dot jury, comprised of 40 independent designers, professors and journalists who test, discuss and evaluate thousands of products from all over the world for several days. The criteria examined by this expert committee for the Red Dot Award each year are: creation of an excellent design, the correct design strategy, and commercial success.

KADIA had already received the if Award in spring. As the winner of this globally renowned design label, the E line was able to win over Germany's oldest independent design institution – iF International Forum Design GmbH in Hannover. The innovative KADIA honing machine impressed the 58-person jury of international experts with its design performance. The competition for this award was also very tough, given its more than 5,000 submissions from 59 countries.

This is how kinematics and machining work during honing

Whenever there is a need to improve the functional sliding, guiding or sealing properties of contact surfaces in bores, all roads lead to honing.

In the case of high-precision parts, the achieved dimensional, geometrical and surface tolerances are less than 1 µm. But how exactly does this demanding process work? What are its characteristics?

What is typical to honing is, above all, the simultaneous overlaying of...
